Foods for Fatty Liver
As mentioned in the prevent fatty liver article, food is a crucial key to reverse a fatty liver.
The disease partly develops because of the amount of fat consumed by the individual, which in some cases is higher than recommended.
Some of these fats are stored in and around the liver, thus contributing to the development of fatty liver disease.
It’s worth mentioning that for the most part, foods for fatty liver are generally good for many other diseases that depend on good nutrition.
Those of you who ask “What should I eat with a Fatty Liver?” (and what you should not eat), below are some answers.
First lets talk about the foods that you should limit their quantity in your meals:
- White bread.
- Butter.
- Most prepared breakfast cereals (usually contain high levels of sugar).
- White rice.
- Concentrated sugar.
- Fat rich meals, like – Hamburger, Pizza, etc.
- High-glycerin food.
- High-cholesterol food (eggs for example – limit yourself to two eggs per week).
- Carbonated drinks.
- Fried food / fast food.
Now let’s take a look on some foods you should try to focus on:
- Beans and unprocessed grains.
- Whole grain bread.
- Slim milk instead of whole milk.
- Food with high level of proteins.
- Cinnamon.
- Vegetables for fatty liver – broccoli is especially highly recommended.
- Fruits for fatty liver (3-4 slices per day – try to avoid bananas as it contains a lot of glucose).
Moderation is the Key
Please remember that I’m not recommending to never eat the mentioned food above. It’s all about moderation. Eating your favorite food once in a while is not a crime, but you should limit yourself and monitor your progress. Determination is the key to your success.
In addition, remember that weight loss is the most affecting way to cure a fatty liver. And the best affective way to do so, it by a combination of eating different food and exercise. Physical activity helps to burn your fat much faster, and replaces it with muscles.
Here is a food pyramid you could use as a general guide:

The best diet for fatty liver is a raw food diet, as well as the things you need to avoid, you must try to eat as much raw vegetables and fruits as possible. Also take a good B complex supplement, plus extra pantothenic acid (best as calcium pantothenate) choline + Inositol. Cut out the booze completely..

The main baseline you need to follow when eating fruits is the amount of the fruits you eat and the amount of the glucose in the fruit you are eating. Basically, try to eat fruits with low levels of glucose, and about 3 units per day.

I have been diagnosed with a fatty liver. I also seem to be losing muscle. I had a Lap Band surgery about a year ago…I am going in next week for another ultrasound. I am far from lazy, and I am now hitting treadmill and doing a good nightly workout. I also am taking milk-thistle daily. Is there anything else you can recommend, that might help?

Hello, my name is TJ. I am 20, (almost 21 years old.). I have had pains in the right side of my abdomen for about 9-11 years now, and only at the beginning of this year, I decided to get it checked. I had been to the hospital almost once a week for a couple months. I was diagnosed with NASH, (Non-Alcoholic Stateohepatitis), and was referred to the NASH diet. As stubborn as I am, I didn’t follow doctors’ orders. (Mainly because I didn’t know how to find out what I can and cannot eat. I need a detailed list.). I could be on my way to having Cirrhosis, and I don’t know what to do. Can anyone help me? It would be very much appreciated.
September 14th, 2011 at 1:38 AM
Hello TJ,
Have the doctors gave any reason why you’re having NASH? You are very young, and it’s very rare to have NASH at this stage of your life.
Please reply, and I would be glad to assist you.

Hi
I have been diagnosed with fatty liver. My ALT is now 67 and AST 40. Other components of the LFT are within normal range but they keep fluctuating. I am using milk thistle and liv 52. Also the ultrasound said mild fatty changes throughout the liver. Based on those values does it sound like it is reversible?
November 9th, 2011 at 7:11 AM
Hello Kassy,
Yes, your condition is totally reversible. Basically, your treatment should focus on proper diet, exercise, and live a generally healthy life style.
Please remember there are no medications for fatty liver.
Yours,
Dr. Mark Bar-Gomel
November 9th, 2011 at 7:14 AM
Hello Carol,
I think your doctor wasn’t that concerned because your condition is not severe and is reversible in most cases.
Basically, the treatment is about eating the right food, doing exercise, and just change your lifestyle.
I recommend your read the various articles in the website.
With you all well,
Dr. Mark Bar-Gomel
